As he rode along the main street, the town seemed to turn a blind eye, shutters were closed, doors were locked, playing children were ushered inside and silenced until all that was left was red dust blowing in the dry desert winds and a handful of tumbleweeds scurrying around. He surveyed the territory under his brim of his low-crowned black hat, black eyes as black as his heart. He needed a shave badly, had not dared to venture near a town for weeks after the last bank hold up and the posse on his trail and the skin beneath his thick black beard felt as if it had a hundred red ants crawling around in a nest.
Everyone knew who he was, Billy Bob Baker, or Black Bill as he was more renowned, dressed in black,jet black hair tied in a long horsetail, thick black moustache and the most significant, telltale sign of all, the long, jagged, scar from his eye to his chin. No one knew exactly how he had acquired it, some rumoured that it was from a saloon fight with a crazy,old, drunken prospector in a card game after he had cheated him out of his claim, while others said it had been an unfortunate kick from a wild mustang he had been trying to break, anyway he didn't mind it,it served a purpose and was good for his bad reputation.
Spying the saloon at the end of the street, he took his horse into the livery and decided to get a couple of shots of bourbon since his throat was as parched as a desert thistle and then a visit to the barber and finally, and the thing he had missed the most ,a cool bath with a willing woman.
As he walked into the saloon, silence descended, he glared at the piano player, demanding in a rumbling bass voice,
''Beautiful Dreamer boy ok-was my ma's favourite ,God rest her soul-and don't rush it-nice and slow ,ok''
The piano player gave him a look which said of course anything was ok by him and started to play.
Six shots of bourbon and three renditions of Beautiful Dreamer later, he sauntered slowly to the doors ,eyeing the line up of girls awaiting his attention, he shrugged, these girls were all as one to him, a soft embrace on a lonely night, it didn't matter much, he never had complaints and paid them well.
Billy Bob dressed and threw the girl some bills and with a final kiss on the lips,went out into the cool desert wind.Tonight ,he was feeling lucky and knew there were a few card games going on which he would join. He needed to buy some tonic for his hair to keep it sweet and cool in this hot, clammy atmosphere. Seeing there was a mercantile across the road, he decided to go check it out.
The door of the mercantile creaked as he strode in, his spurs rattling and sparking as he did ,inside was shadowy and cool and there were a couple of guys playing pool in the corner, three kids taking forever to choose some candy from the variety of jars stacked on the counter and two women looking at yardage for their new dresses, no problems then.
Walking to the counter he noticed the finest looking woman he had ever seen, hair like a cornfield in the dawn, eyes as blue as cornflowers in spring and curves which spoke of promising nights together. Everyone in the shop had gone silent except her, she was talking to the proprietor's wife ,though the wife was not answering, just staring at Billy Bob. Billy wasn't used to such disregard, he enjoyed being feared, though many of the stories about him had grown legs over the course of time and he had just got used to being feared gave him power and protection....and a little too much confidence, taking much for granted.
Approaching the counter, he asked for his hair tonic, the wife ran to get it at once ,but the cornflower eyes flashed as they turned on him;
''Sir, if you were a gentleman, you would wait your turn!''
Silence hung in the air as the shopkeeper, pleading with her in his eyes, gave a strange sort of whimper.
''Well, maybe I ain't no gentleman'' he leered.
''That sir is quite clear'', she retorted spiritedly.
Billy Bob approached and attempted to take her arm;
''Men have died for less than that,'', he growled, after all he had a reputation to uphold, these hayseeds didn't need to know that he had never actually killed a soul, and that his scar had been a parting gift from his pa at the age of 12.
''If you say so'',she replied in a slightly mocking tone, giving him a brief glance of disbelief,''then I am sure that is the case''
Billy Bob reached to grab her by the waist whereupon she took took out a rider's whip from beneath her skirts and, cracking it around his feet, brought him to the ground.
As he was floundering at her feet, she gave him a cold stare,saying,
''Maybe, you will think twice sir before you dare to disrepect a lady again!'',
Her pink, floral bussel sashayed out of the mercantile, not before, with much to the amusement of the townsfolk, pouring the tonic over his shiny black hair .
Billy Bob watched in amusement, exclaiming to the whole, open-mouthed mercantile,
''I am in love!''
