lj idol 3 strikes, week 18

The rumour which was doing the rounds was that Robert Brennan had returned to Bundoran, the town was buzzing with it. Robert had always been the celebrity, the local boy made good and had reached the heady heights of being one of the most gifted and renowned concert pianists in the world. His renditions of Chopin and Mozart were formidable and had no parallel in the concert circuit.

Then, suddenly he disappeared from the limelight, becoming a reclusive figure of many a speculative discussion. Concerts were cancelled, no one could track him down. Now, he was returning to his home town and he was the talk on every gossip’s tongue, the locals were having a field day and the craft group, who had not really learned their lesson, falling into their old way of things, was abuzz each morning with the whys and wherefores of this new turn of events.

''Well, 'tis a pretty how do you do indeed! Our local boy who brought such acclaim to our dear town denying his audiences and throwing back his talent into the dear Lord's face!''

Ciara Aherne said with a look of disdain upon her face .

''Ach yes, to be sure, some people don't know when they are well off, how has he ever had to struggle like us!? Rich, famous, staying in the best hotels, eating at the best restaurants, enjoying the company of royalty! Ach,'tis ungrateful he is, and his ma and pa sacrificing so much for his education!'' Clodagh went on.

And so they went on, flapping their tongues with all sorts of reasons why he had given up playing, each one more outrageous than the other, from illness to murder!

So Robert arrived and took up residence in the house standing high on the hills above Bundoran, overlooking the restless sea. With only a cook and a maid, he lived a solitary existence, taking long walks on the stretch of sand below, in sun and shade. His piano lid remained closed and locked, and not one musical note echoed through the house. Time passed and Robert felt old though he had just reached only his fiftieth year. His quiet hermitude continued day in, day out,

Some time after his arrival, a newcomer arrived in town, a new music teacher. Again intrigue was spurred on in the craft morning, in the brewery canteen and on the streets and into the Kickin' Donkey local. This newcomer attracted great interest with the men with her flowing black hair and sparkling blue eyes. Her name was Caitlin and even the women were enamoured by her for she had a way about her which endeared her to all she met. Kindly to everyone, she had a way of making everyone feel special and valued, men and women and even the children.

Caitlin was an accomplished harpist and many of the locals would sit on the benches outside her little cottage listening to her play every evening.

'' Like listening to the angels in heaven'', Mrs Duncannon told young Mary as they were making the teas for the brewers morning break, ''such a talent!''

Caitlin loved the sea and had taken to going each summer evening to sit on the rocks with her small harp and playing as she looked out to the horizon. A figure in the shadows had also taken up residence on the rocks in the background too, unseen by Caitlin, until as she walked back towards the town every evening, the figure would rest awhile and then retreat into the darkness. One evening though, after playing for a while, she paused to take a drink and called out,

''I know you are there, why don't yer come out of those shadows and show yer face then?

For a few moments, there was silence, the she heard footsteps clambering over the rocks until Robert stood before her. As he sat down next to her quietly, she began to play as they sat together in the silence of the evening, the music healing the pain of his broken heart for the love he had lost two years before. As Caitlin reached over to take his hand ,they walked back to the town together,Robert ready to start living once more.
